The Holy Land's natural resource: Prayer

Father David reports on a conversation with a taxi driver.

rain

A few days ago I returned from overseas and during my trip from the airport to my home in Jerusalem, I spoke with the taxi driver, a secular Jew of Iraqi descent, about the heavy rains of the past few days. I said to him:

"A real blessing for our parched country!"

"Yes, indeed! An answer to our prayers."

"But are you religious? You are not wearing a skullcap."

"No, I am not religious."

"So what do you mean "an answer to our prayers"? You are saying "our prayers"… do you also pray?"

"Listen my friend, is there anybody who lives in this country who does not pray? After all God is on everybody's lips, religious and non-religious, Jews and Arabs… This is the natural resource of the Holy Land: prayer… thanks to prayer and despite everything else this country continues to breathe".
